BEASTARS - Vol. 6 Ch. 51 - Life Tastes Like Heavy Lead

funfact: deers can eat meat in the real world. A lot of herbivore can.

Well, I don't really find it to be shocking or anything. While the author is probably trying to convey that eating another herbivore or animal at all would be similar to what we'd see as cannibalism even though they're different races. But as someone of our human world I can't relate to that, they're of different races after all.

Oh yeah, I've heard of deer just straight up eating birds and shit.

Come to think of it, actually I'm pretty sure hippos are herbivores too? But just like deer they sometimes eat meat. Just thinking about the other reply reminded me of that, earlier Beastars had the hippo in the carnivore camp... but they're not carnivores any more than deer are.

I'm not sure what separates a herbivore that sometimes eats meat and an omnivore, though.

Either way, considering this world already established a lot of carnivores eat people, him eating something doesn't hold any more meaning than that in my books. Eating someone sapient is always kinda fucked up but it's whatever.

I googled some stuff, it seems like red deer most of the time feed on vegetation mushrooms plants etc. but if they are missing vitamins or minerals from their diet they will consume small birds for their bones or eat the bones and skin of other deer. Wow.

But the thing is that, in this world, nobody is supposed to eat meat. Compared to our world

Deer eating meat is actually more common than you would think. Especially in the winter they will tend to eat small animals if vegitation is very scarce. Even seen on occasion where a buck will hunt if he is riled up.

I've seen a video on youtube where deer nabbed some steaks right off of a grill so this isn't so far-fetched.
Our boy's probably gonna have a stomachache after this, though.

This is getting really interesting. I really like how the world is being fleshed out in this series. While in our world it is somewhat normal for herbivores to eat meat (during winter in particular, when there is more energy to be found in meat than plants), here it's outrageous. It's unheard of and I'm here for it.

Not trying to burst your bubble, but humans have a herbivore digestive system (very long bowel) that can also digest meat to a certain degree if forced to.

Watch "game changers" (on Netflix) and you'll have your eyes opened.

@stonefinger : Yet humans only have the one stomach and lack the digestive enzymes to break down cellulose. "Not trying to burst your bubble" but it isn't a "herbivore digestive system". It is an opportunist omnivore digestive system. Generalised, not specialised, in order to break down pretty much anything reasonably rich in nutrients but not anything too tough.

I knew it. I knew this dude would end up eating meat at some point. I thought this was the "big secret" Bill found out at the back alley market, but looks like I was a little early.

that is basically like a cannibalism right? those lions were pretty surprised he really did ate it...
