Basically Melissa and Yuri tell Jake that he may think that something small and cute needs protecting, but in truth that small and cute person/thing can protect itself just fine, and who is he to judge whether or not that person/thing needs protection in the first place (especially without the consent of said person/thing). Alsoooooo Melissa keeps him plenty safe, aside from following Jake herself, she makes sure Nine is right by his side lol + Yuri is nearby as well~
