On the one hand, readers want heterosexual romance, in which they want to see themselves as MC, and on the other, many otaku and hiki among readers literally hate MC because of envy. This is one of the reasons why CGDCT and ambiguous yuri bait is so popular. Shoujo essentially has the same problems.
