And when you reach the apocalypse they're actually the good guys and the real evil guys is the evil inside of every person.

Well Birdy was raised as a blunt instrument with no political awareness at all. She is ill equipped to even deal with any sort of subtlety. Honestly she has no time to develop the political skills needed, her best hope is to latch onto someone like Gomez or the pair who effectively raised her and hope for the best.
