Apparently the author forgot the original premise of the series, but perhaps after rereading her own work from the beginning, she was reminded of it and thought one extra chapter would somehow fix everything.

I'm pretty sure they've given up on the original premise at this point, this isn't intended to "fix" anything. It would have been interesting maybe to see a relatively comedic focused story that incorporates struggling with murderous urges into their romance, but I accepted pretty early on that wasn't what this was going to be.

Even after accepting the idea that he's been soft retconned into just a chuuni and not a repressed killer, it's still a decent romcom.

@IHavoc Yeah, this is still quite decent. It's just annoying how that major element was pushed out of the way so quickly, after it had been used to gain readers' attention. It's kind of like how the worst B movies still can have great looking trailers. Fortunately this series didn't start to suck after the theme was abandoned, but it's a pity nonetheless.

I have to wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that MC has been retconned, or the original premise has been discarded. I don't know about others, but to me he has always been a chuuni since chapter one with no actual murderous impulse. He was just mentally playing pretend, and "I want to kill this girl" is just a chuuni way of thinking "I have a crush on her"
