At least he realised it's not all about what he wants. Mina has already experienced multiple times that her hard carapace has hurt Takuma. I don't believe she actually desires to be more like a human for any existential reasons, but she has probably decided that she could get closer to Takuma and be more like a wife if her body was more like a human's. Maybe there was a cheaper option to upgrade just the surface of her body, leaving the CPU, power source, and such alone. The deluxe kit, after all, would have pretty much changed her whole identity, by the looks of it.
