Some useless additional tidbits: The "Spiel des Jahres" award that they mentioned here is pretty much the most coveted award for board games in the world. Even just getting nominated for it has a massive influence on a game's sales.
This can range from regular board games selling about 500-3000 copies, to 10000 copies or more just for being nominated. Winning the award usually catapults you up to 300.000+ copies sold.

I find it kinda unrealistic that a science major would have problem with winning games, board/card ones especially. It's all about probability and algorithms in the end, most professional gamblers will tell you that. Not saying that this would result in a 100% winning ratio, but still!
