Man, Ryuuji went next level stupid here -- like, full-blown pants on head retarded. How exactly was he planning on breaking through that giant-ass beetle's carapace with a slashing attack? At least Sheila's preparations and attacks were well thought; even if they weren't super effective. His only concern from start-to-finish was to satiate his own ego. He completely disregarded teamwork, and even the safety of his partner, to focus on proving that he's strong. This truly showed that he's a myopic teenager who needs to be protected -- from himself. Hopefully it will be a good learning experience for him. He's a kid after all, so mistakes are bound to be made. But when lives are on the line those sort of excuses won't bring comfort when people die; which is obvious he didn't even consider.

@cor3zone - I agree. He's definitely not in a great position to foster healthy growth. Although, the potential is there; his Mother severely hinders it. I think her intervention here works well, but I'm worried it'll have the opposite effect on him. I definitely think Sheila is supporting his growth, and while Chiquita's main priority is keeping Karma in check, she also cares for him to some extent, but his Mom's just too much. She weighs down the other side of the scale to such an extreme that their support won't amount to much anyway.
I have to disagree with your Frodo analogy, though. He was never the strongest fighter -- no doubt. But he definitely gained a significant amount of inner-strength while carrying the ring for 17 years, and throughout his journey. It's even more impressive when you consider the weight of what he was carrying. You're right, however, that in comparison to the other hobbits physically, he didn't end his journey with the same capabilities; that's also, in part, due to how hard his journey was.

@Happily_Grim I don't think Frodo grew at all. All the other hobbits gained wisdom or confidence. Frodo was just so broken, he literally had to leave the world behind. But this isn't the place for that.

Chiquita obviously cares about him, but Karma always comes first. Anything she does to help Ryuuji is actually placating Karma, since she's too attached to him. Chiquita getting Ryuuji away from Karma for a while was really just to try preparing Karma for him possibly leaving her someday. (At least that's how I read it.)

Sheila is very good for him, but since she's also a novice and kinda swept up in Karma's power-level, she tends to just go with the stupid shit Ryuuji does. Like in this chapter. She's good support, but not the counter-balance he desperately needs. In fact, I can see Sheila's personal growth, like the spells she's learned, actually pushing Ryuuji even further into recklessness. She's showing tangible results, while he just failed miserably, putting her in danger in the process.

I can understand MCs dumbassery. He doesnt know danger because Karma is always there and thus his sense of danger is dulled to the point. He is subconsciously relying on Karma, and he isnt making steps on moving away and truly developing an "independent" self. It's also technically Karma's fault that hes that weak and idiotic, but she is a Dragon and not a Human mother, so she has a different set of morals, and her morals are akin to an abusive parent. This will be an...impossible mountain to climb because Karma is a "reality destroyer" threat, and in order for MC to succeed in his goal, Karma must be gone and must be built from the foundations up.

@cor3zone - Yeah, I can see how you may think that. I'm not entirely sure I'd agree, but there's some truth to it, for sure. Makes me wanna do a re-read.

I agree about Chiquita. There's no doubt Karma will always be her highest priority. Like you said, she still cares for him, but it's also partly for self-serving reasons. It's quite literally a matter of survival for the world. Whether Karma has yet to realize or not, one day Ryuuji's gonna die; he's only human afterall. So Chiquita's in a weird position of getting her to incrementally accept separation long before that inevitability. I kind of wish we'd get to see what happens... Still, I'd like to think there's also a small part of her that helps Ryuuji because she helped raise and tutor him for a bit -- even if it was her mission.

I'm really enjoying Sheila, too. Which is why this chapter was particularly frustrating. Like I said, it's a dick move to put her in danger for his own ego. It's been pretty cool to see how she's grown, but when juxtaposed with Ryuuji... Ugh. At this point she's just going to be another crutch for him to lean on as he does whatever he wants. I genuinely don't know where he's gonna find a person that'll help him grow. It can only be someone else we've yet to meet really. Sheila's someone who's great support, but she can only offer so much, and he tends to do what he wants. He needs someone who's strict and will discipline him. A father figure, maybe?

Can anyone really help him with Karma around, though? I mean, Chiquita gave him a golden opportunity to go out and experience things, which can be a type of support, but then he royally messed it up. I don't see how he wouldn't think to be a bit more cautious given his circumstances. He need to get the pernicious ideas of what an adventurer is out of his head first, so he doesn't make himself into another obstacle.
Chances are we're back to square one with the shit he pulled here.

@Happily_Grim Well, he's still a kid, with a skewed sense of power. So far, he's just normal, yet he's comparing himself to a literal world-ender and a top-tier magician. Not to mention his skewed sense of danger, since Karma always comes to the rescue. Like all kids, he'll do stupid shit. But with his expectations and Karma's power, the consequences will always edge disaster.

He'll never be free of Karma; she casts too large a shadow. The only thing that could help him would be someone equal to Karma, but opposite in guidance. Maybe the legendary hero returned? Honestly, I think I'll just accept that Ryuuji will always be useless and coddled; despite his protest it doesn't seem to change in his favor!

It's easy to forget that he's been super isolated his whole life as well. It's only going to exasperate the problem.
