Haughty elves... I get so tired of seeing it. Part of the reason I liked Dragon Age: Origins was that elves were very much the despised and ostracized race, which was a breath of fresh air form the "I am an elf and thus superior, yaddayaddayadda...". It was also interesting that even though the wood elves (forget the in-universe name for them) were independent and not push overs, they still very much fit in a "know your place, elf" situation. And, ironically enough, still thought themselves superior to the dirty degenerate city elves that they looked down on as kowtowing bootlickers.

Fantasy entertainment needs more elf-on-elf violence, I say. And if the dark elf and wood elf women want to settle their differences by, say, mudwrestling nude - all the better.

@Rover If I remember correctly, so long as fire is strong enough it can burn out of control even in a downpour of rain. The difference between being rained on and being under water is that there is still oxygen in the air when it's raining and the amount of water the rain provides isn't nearly as dense as it would be if the place was completely submerged under water. Fire needs both fuel and room to maintain itself, and oxygen is the primary catalyst that keeps fires going. With that said, I'm not an expert on this matter, and I remember reading cases where fires continued to burn in situations where oxygen wasn't present(such as fires in space or in an artificial vacuum), so while oxygen is the most important factor in keeping fires going, it's very likely that it doesn't have to be oxygen. So long as there is some kind of fuel, fires will burn. I just don't remember what the alternative types of fuel are.

@Svelandria like you said fire need space to maintain it self in this case the space is the wood right? Then when the wood get wet aren't fire didn't have space to maintain it self? Like when we use a thin dry branch to make a campfire rather than a wet thick branch because it can make fire light up. Aren't it's work like that?

@Rover From what I understand, it also depends on how strong the fire is. You are correct that wet wood has a really hard time catching on fire. However, once it's on fire the fire simply needs to burn stronger and bigger than whatever is trying to put it out. I suppose what's important to note is that lightning has tendency to pierce whatever it hits, and in this situation the lighting pierced a tree, therefore setting the inside of the tree that is still dry on fire. Once the inside caught on fire, it grew big enough and strong enough to the point where the wet wood and the rain didn't matter as the heat would eventually dry the outer wood before burning it. This is why forest fires can still happen during a thunderstorm(like in this chapter) despite how strong the rain is, and also why it's so hard to put the fires out once they become too big to handle as the fire can simply dry whatever wood becomes wet before spreading. Often times the only way to stop a huge forest fire is to isolate the fire by chopping down the trees in it's path(fire usually follows the wind) that haven't caught on fire yet, thus preventing the fire from spreading any further. Otherwise, you just have to let the fire burn itself out on it's own, usually due to the wind direction causing the fire to burn towards some obstacle that can't be burned or away from the rest of the trees and towards the edge of the forest, or when the wind completely dies down and the fire can't reach any neighboring trees without the wind's help. With all this in mind, it's nice to know the author did some research on forest fires as the elves had actually mentioned chopping some trees down so as to prevent the rest of the forest from burning, even at the expense of more homes being destroyed. Thankfully, however, Douglas was there to save the day.

Again, I'm not an expert on all this and I'm pretty sure there's a lot more factors that come into play, like how close the trees are to each other, the size of the trees, how strong and/or dry the wind is, and the overall quality of the wood, so take what I've said with a grain of salt.

I guess it's a difference of experiences based on where people live perhaps. Here's some other factors to consider on the issue of storms and fires. What kind of trees are these to begin with? How densely packed together are they? What sort of leaves or needles do they have? Is there a lot of dead wood? Has it been really dry lately until this sudden storm? What are the wind conditions like? What type of rain is it in the first place?

Not to put too fine a point on this, but yes, even this situation we've seen here could have allowed for a forest fire in the rain. The rain seems heavy and all but the other factors matter quite a lot.
