Yeah he was 'late' for her situation, but he didn't even know she existed, and it's not like he didn't make her situation better (even if she already had enough money after buying her freedom she'd be poor, so at least she has money now). That's why people are confused because if you look at it logically and aren't -trying- to find someone to blame like she is, there is no reason to be mad at MC.
