@Cidolfas: I don't read the WN, but my guess is that the story had enough openings that the author think he can add this guy to characterize him earlier than whenever he appears in the WN, and to add a little more drama to otherwise 'harmless' quest.

Wouldn't be too bad, especially if whatever is his issue and the girl's issue can somewhat be co-related.

That's probably what happened. A lot of the web novels get heavily reworked when they get published. every other arc of shield hero is either mostly or entirely new to the light novel. Probably something similar here. Actually Shield Hero also had a problem where the other heroes were too dumb and simple at the beginning of the web novel and so they were rewritten in the beginning to have more clear and meaningful flaws that the author didn't decide on until the end of the web novel. It's probably the same thing here.
