The manga skipped Arc 8, which was something of a depressing sidestory arc.

When Douglas and Ravi are going home from Toyberry, they overhear travellers talking about how a certain forest area nearby is haunted by a ghost. Ravi gets really curious and wants to see it, so Douglas gives in and takes her there.

The ghost ends up being friendly, a young man called Bruno. He'd gone to the forest looking for flowers to give to his fiancee, but fell and died in the fall. He's been looking for people to recover his remains and bring them back to his village so he can see his beloved one last time.

Douglas and Ravi comply and bring Bruno's remains back, but are faced with a terrible truth - the fiancee had a serious mental breakdown upon finding out he died. For the past few years her parents (and Bruno's) have placated her by saying Bruno's on a long trip and has yet to return. Although she's no longer trying to kill herself, she exists as a crazed, haggard shadow of her former self.

The fiancee's mother is furious and throws Douglas out, afraid he'll spark her daughter's madness again. Bruno's parents are far more appreciative of the recovery, but refuse to accept the remains or make an official grave, to protect the fiancee's remaining sanity. Although Bruno is saddened, his base regret is fulfilled and he automatically passes on. Douglas and Ravi leave the village the next day; it's implied Bruno's remains are buried in an unmarked grave.

then again, that healthy alan does disappears into smoke right after, so maybe it's some sort of illusion?

Yeah I'm pretty sure Alan was not the one who hex'd our MC but someone used the ring to set up a siphon hex between the two without their knowledge and now Alan is suffering from the rebound of the unwitting hex.
IMO someone is playing strings and trying to frame him and set up a confrontation between the two. Cuz based off everything we've seen about the relationship between Alan and Douglas (Douglas shown as a mentor figure to him in the past with both of them being happy, Alan defending Douglas when the Mage guy (or was it Dario I can't remember) insulted him in Chapter 1, Alan defending the Healer chick and kicking out Dario for insulting her) he doesn't fit the bill for someone using the methods the antagonist is.

It was explained back when the mc unknowingly dispelled the curse that there’ll be a backlash to the caster.

@LordTrollbias I doubt it, I recall the ring was incredibly important to the hero so for him to give it away or for it to be used without him knowing is unlikely. I think it’s because he had no other choice, for some reason he needed the power.
