i feel like he wanted her to remember that they met at the lake when they were young since he asked her about it... but when she lied and said she only found it in passing maybe he thought that she forgot? but then when she brought up the black haired girl he became shocked when it turned out she did actually remember.. so im thinking basically the mom dressed him as a girl because she wanted a daughter.. then he went to the war and when he came back he decided not to visit her anymore because of the scars he got and the fact that at that point it was gonna be revealed that he was a guy the whole time XD
