Using animals to depict the conflict makes for a digestible read. But, I know too many 'Nam vets to put it out of mind. It's a great read with excellent information and, rabbits aside, it's faithful to the tactics and the attitude of the time. The aussies remembered their jungle fighting experience from years prior, but the Americans had forgotten all about it. We went in blind against people who'd been fighting the French and Japanese for decades on home turf before we even knew they existed.

You can't win a politics-heavy war, and you can't convince GI's to do a second tour for democracy... We were so busy trying to keep the reds out of the jungle that they waltzed right onto our streets and took over colleges and academia. We didn't raise our kids well enough to resist and now the fight continues at home. C'est la vie.

Not only was it a politics-heavy war, the Vietnamese had obviously a better reason for winning. "Liberation of the people" sounds way better than "keeping the commies out of a foreign country". Not justifying the commies were all that great though (since I'm living in one).
