It seems to be a mental breakdown, triggered by stress. I'd be pretty rattled if my son was close to a cliff and mock-pushed like had happened before, moreso if my concern wasn't taken seriously. And her attachment seems goes beyond what is healthy.
Now that she's pushed a kid off a cliff, she has all the more reason to dissociate (in denial) or act strangely – more stress.

Wait a minute; that overlook was pretty damn high, it would have taken quite awhile to reach the bottom, since they had to find a route around. Didn't the group travel half a day just to get as far up as they did? Shigeru should be looking a lot worse for wear unless he hit some leaf-covered branches on the way down. Additionally, unless his mother dragged him, shouldn't Shigeru be next to the base of a cliff?
