I hate love rivals/love triangles more than any other plot device, but the only thing I can see him doing is creating progress and bringing together the two main characters. It’s not like he’s going to actually be a love rival or a 3rd wheel.

If he confesses his love to Senpai (which certainly appears to be the case), then he becomes a love rival and, by default, a 3rd wheel since he is not a main character. This would certainly not be the first series in which a love rival appeared within a few short chapters of the end of the series.
