@paulr Well it seems like this isn't a flashback, 'cause it starts with an apology note from him. So she must have had some other reason. It started about the time he told everyone that despite their advice and grousing he wasn't giving up and was going to re-do the burnt construction for the client, and still refuse to take any financial help from the bald guy, and then that girl came along and told them some stuff about what he'd said elsewhere that put it in context and everyone was like, respect--except she seems to have gotten pissed off about then, and I don't get why.
My guess for the reason she is pissed is because the main character keeps putting everyone and the business before his own well-being. He helps out with the funeral of others, but hasn’t been able to hold his own parents’ funeral. She also wasn’t there in the hallway with the other construction workers when the office lady explains the main character’s reasoning for refusing his help (ch. 22), so she doesn’t understand his rationale like the others now do.
Also, I doubt that the main character thought that the interest was marrying the daughter - it’s probably just a dumb rumor to bring in misunderstandings/drama.
