The best example of a country with working traditional ‘trial’ marriages is Scotland. There you could marry as a trial for a year before deciding if it would work for you as a couple for life. The marriage could then be annulled with no repercussions. Both partners could marry again and any children from that first year would be legitimate. If they decided to stay together they could have a second ceremony to seal the deal but the wedding would be counted from the first wedding.

This was most often done with couples who did not know each other well at first so they would get a year to see if they would be a good marriage.

ngl the whole sacrificing someone else just bc the princess is sick makes me feel like the royal family is kinda suss. maybe I'm just being cynical or reading too much into it but tbh I feel like it would make sense if the royal family was just using her

... what the king is suggesting is basicly a preperation for a new war....
or at least its going to lead to a new obe
those hostages were as much for the victor as for the loser of a war
it would allow two sides that hated each other to at least have a limited trust
now evaluate again how likely it is for her to be divorced in the next couple of years not to mention until the next walpurgis
that plan is flawed from the get go and as such i realy doubt the mc's brains
not to mention that she went into the lions mouth were she could die any minute for nothing but a promise

and just to also mention the ugly side of things...
giving up or exchanging a hostage is what allows two nations to reconcile after a bloody war without extermination of the enemy leadership down to the roots
so while the kings may complain about them demanding his sister thats the reason he is still alive, which he doesnt seem to mind very much...
