Criminale! - Vol. 3 Ch. 17 - Class 2-0 VS Phantom Thief Harukana

Man I hate characters like this. Not the mischievous thief part; the inexplicably infallible, nearly omnipotent character.

The author literally had to break the setting to create this character, not only making her faster, smarter, and more talented than everyone, but everyone around them has to lose half their IQ just to facilitate this character's fake superiority.

So far we've seen her:
-Turn invisible in plain sight on top of the statue of liberty.
-Apply a photorealistic makeup job in less than a minute: including changing her height and build to match an American male.
-Incapacitate and hide an American soldier (the copilot she impersonated) also in plain sight on top of the statue, possibly also stealing his helmet and uniform (unless she somehow had all that in her pockets along with her facial prosthesis mask kit).
-Impersonate an adult male with a flawless American accent: Ignoring how ridiculous it is for a teenage girl to deepen her voice that much, how long did she even hear this guy speak for? Long enough to fool a guy who he works with every day?

She then proceeds to(in quick order):
-effortlessly pickpocket the paranoid guy .
-effortlessly escape the principal and her trap.
-effortlessly dodge the assassin girl
-effortlessly capture and escape with the paranoid guy

Apparently this manga ended prematurely because the author was ill in some way, but if this character doesn't improve then I don't think I'm going to make it all the way through the meager chapter count.

@TheManBuck Normally i prefer to turn off my brain to things like this... but i agree with you wholeheartedly.

I personally hate the "phantom thief" trope, because they dont depend on real intelligence, they depend on EVERYONE in the world becoming a bunching of morons and in magical trick even when magic isnt part of the story, sure it can be fun but when the writers try to pass every single dumb thing on the thief being intelligent and their exploits being marvels of planing i just can't accept it.

I know that must be good stories like that but the success of these good ones and the fact the trope is easily abused and easy to dumbed out, most of the examples seem more like an insult to human intelligence.

@alacaelum That's a really good point. If they reigned it in a bit and devoted some panels to showing some actual preparation or planning it would feel a lot less like a negative trope, but authors tend to just skip to when the character's plans all succeed and they expect us to just accept it.

@TheManBuck There is an old manga called "Mouse" (which is more than a little porny) that the main character is a member of an old family of thieves... and BOI... i read that shit only because of the borderline porn.

Just so that you get an idea of how his "planning" is:

- There is a point where he plans to rob a crystal skull in a museum, so... what he does? He excavated all the ground underground to make the museum sink.

- There is another one where he robs a safe car (I dont remember what it had) so when the car is passing a bridge, an ENORMOUS mechanical crocodile swoops from below eats half of the bridge with the car. And just to make matters worse, the "rival" detective for the first time one-up him, tranquilizes his hottie helpers, and when he finally has him on the ropes... HE LET HIM GO BECAUSE HIS METHOD OF CAPTURE WAS CHEATING... after that i really was reading just for the porn.

- And the cherry on top... i kid you not, his family is so rich and so powerful that they have a hold on the government itself, and one time they paid so much for some shit in a country that they literally "saved their economy" (words used by the characters).

Oh and all them bicthes want his cock (the porn part), he just needs to breathe and some girl gets wet.

Anyway, it was just a power trip of a story, funny though but you really need to turn the brain off.
