Ok so the curse is a thing but why is the prince the one at fault here? He didn't kill the spirits himself and all he wants is to be friends with the spirits. I feel like it's not really fair.

What's interesting is how small-scale versions of this coercion happens all the time in the real world. And probably less in politics than in entertainment. Somebody powerful comes right out and says something to your face, but later noone can know. Or people can't say anything about it happening.
