So, the entire point of the D-game is to "evolve" humans capable of defeating the Doume, to prevent the apocalypse Rick described?
 
Actually, the more I think about it, isn't this just a variation on the premise behind Gantz?

Well when the game had a "comrade" penalty that extended to every single player, I had a feeling that non-player humans would have to exist...

They sure changed the bet. As I understood it, originally it was Shuka vs Themis personally. They weren't involving their entire clans. Whoever lost, that individual would become the subordinate of the other.
