If I understand it correctly, "imperial knights" means "elite bodyguards". Like Praetorians. Not a position one switches out to become a temple knight. Unless they were personal bodyguards of Sera and keep doing that even after she joined the Church.the way the chapter describes their position as apprentice temple knights does not automatically mean that they are not also imperial knights.
