The first half was very very good (until chapter 58 or so), then it went progressively downhill. It just went worse as it went on, the author continuing to milk a dead cow turning to a smelly rotten carcass... It was really a disappointement after such a good beginning to have a subpar second half.

First half is very good suspecting, keeping you on the edge of your seat however the second half is kinda a miss for me.
It just didn't have the grip it had from the first half. It feels like a drag near the end.

I only finished it because I got that far and felt that I had to finish it.

Yep, we all know when L died it went downhill. Hands down for the first half of story, one of the best psychological battle ever.

I remember way back in the day when the American Shonen Jump magazine published the first chapter as a one-off. Hooked. I read that one chapter over and over, no other manga had immediately left that kind of impression on me. It lead me to eventually buying a volume for the first time.

@NinjaInPants I don't think the second part was bad, only that the first part was a masterpiece, that's why when L died a kind of void was created in the plot, and to fill it they had to create not one, but 2 characters similar to L, and not even so were they enough to fill the void left by this.
however, as I mentioned, I don't think the second part was bad, in fact I liked the ending (in the anime, now I'll read the manga)

@kjenve One Outs -- I'm not sure if all chapters are scanlated; I watched the anime and then finished the manga, and I think that's what most other people did too.
