The lady is both completely uninterested in having a wish granted, and has no qualms about handing over her soul for pennies either, and the devil seems to be struggling with either professional pride and/or conscience over this, and possibly seems to have his own problems...

All of which, at least for the moment, mostly deflates the usual sources of tension for this premise and instead has turned it into questions of, "what's up with her?" and "what's up with him?" (There are some obvious possible answers to both questions, yet enough of it's up in the air to be interesting)
