As far as redemption arcs go, that was pretty heckin' lame. In the grand bad-writing tradition, we're told, not shown that he's actually a really good guy.

Instead, we're told he's a really good guy, but all his actions make him look like a selfish scumbag instead.

That is the biggest load of BS.
What he was doing wasn't even guaranteed to actually help his sister, just get them to look at him. It would have been more logical to spend all of his days trying to look for a counter-curse or to trying to get more powerful on actual merit.

If they spun it as "this guy is irredeemably evil, but he wanted to help his sister by doing this", I would have bought it. The logic would have been sound for a power grab with the side-merit of healing his sister. But you can't pretend he was just a good guy doing bad things. Good guys don't do bad things like murder.

Sure. Good guy won't think twice about killing an innocent girl just for saving his sister. That happens all the time.

And I think someone already said this already but his method doesn't even guarantee that his sister will be cured. What a lame excuse for redemption.
