I like that the author brought back a reference to the original/our world, even if briefly.

That does leave me with a question about time, though, since more than a decade has passed in the alternate world while in the original/our world, they talk about saying their goodbyes to her, so it implies it's still really recent. Either way, nice of the author to continue some plot points.
