Dokunie Cooking - Vol. 3 Ch. 23 - Targeted Monster-san (Prequel)

Yeah, I'm 50/50 on whether shit just got real or something silly is about to happen.

Knowing the mangaka, I'm gonna go with both.

I really don't understand what this manga want to do.
Is it funny ? Sad ? Logical ? Not logical ? The characters in the manga are dumb ? Sometime not ?

It's a mess and it break any kind of tension this manga can have. Now, I just read the manga without hoping anything.

Maybe the next chapter will have a physical battle with beam, shark, food, people ? Maybe a discussion between the characters, logical or with only misunderstanding ? Maybe it'll be a cooking fight ? Maybe the angel will get MC debts and will be forced to help the monster because fuck logic ? Maybe I should stop reading this manga because it can't stay consistent through one chapter ?

...Is this it? Has the fun come to an end? Do I need to board the feels train? Damn you author; not again. NOT AGAIN!

It's a pretty common thing for this author specifically, but a lot of manga author decide to go the way of using comedy to get you to relate to a character and laugh with them so that when heavier stuff hits and it becomes darker you care more for the characters and what happens to them. It's not hard.

Whether or not it works for you or an author isn't very good at managing it and you feel it's mood whiplash rather than an effective use of bringing you up short when you're not expecting is up in the air. It's understandable if you don't like it but this is a pretty common literary technique.

@Clad95150 Have you ever read this guy's mangas? His series are mostly comical. He does this as a way to cover up what's happening in the background before revealing it all towards the end where it gets serious

uwa, little girl is wea...er holy crap she's the size of Godzilla! Run away! Run away!

Nymph suddenly changed manga....Let's see what kind of background will we get to see from Monster-san.

@OniBarubary : I know of this technique and I often appreciate it. I just find this manga far too inconsistent and illogical to appreciate the heavy part of the story. I can't feel any tension when the solution can be literally anything and his opposite (except for logical actions).

@TomTangent : It's the first time I see his work. The comic part is good but I find the dark part very lacking. The build up just don't do it for me, at the contrary. Worst of it, I find the darker parts works against the comics parts (the comic parts use silly elements while sad part try, without success, to bring logics to the the same elements. The elements are too much illogical to be used for the sad moments but they lose a little of their silliness when the author try to explain them)
