I thought the elf was a trap, when she overreacted to being called a girl. Guess it's just one of those cases of being ignored by everyone all her life and latching onto the first person to show any interest in her.
I'm catching all the old cliches, but I can't help but like the different ideas the author's trying to meld together. "It's a bold strategy Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for him."

I never understand the “I’ll test your skill with a quick definitely lethal attack”. It’s the fantasy equivalent of drowning to prove your not a witch, just once I’d like to see what happens when they wind up murdering someone in the hallway
