Gotou's already operated on at least two cancer patients thus far: one successful (the one from the diet, whose operation Mikami tried to sabotage), the other was already terminal before he came to the clinic (the retired doctor who returned to the island to die).

I completely forgot about the old doctor. The politician arc wasn't really about the cancer though, it was more about Dr. Koto being surrounded by power hungry asswipes while he just wants to do doctor things
