That's how Mashima-sensei's works are. If you've never read one, they start off really fun. In the case of Fairy Tail, I grew weary of it by the time the series ended. Hopefully, that won't be the case here.

But Sensei does love to reuse the same character designs and types in all his series. And nakama power will always win the day.

I liked Rave but didn't like Fairy Tail. Personally, I find EZ to be really enjoyable too.

It makes sense in context though. I mean the cast are supposed to be special right? Or would you rather have them be normal people fighting other normal people? This is like complaining about the main cast of Naruto having great ninja skills.
