Wow, that writing was worse than usual. I usually enjoy the somewhat goofy story but this is just bad. How does a bunch of scientists look down on machines that much? How did she not see the possibility of it being used as a weapon? They never even tried to hide the shape of the gun. She traveled around with the Demon King on a space battleship and participated, presumably, in a lot of combat.

I don't know, i mean from the get go it looked like a giant gun and it would be kind of obvious what it is if she had actually looked at the plans. I guess that why you never trust anyone with a lab coat and mustach

Have to agree with @Dantrig. Hiro Mashima really scraped the bottom of the barrel with this backstory.
We are expected to believe that the entire staff of a research facility (and by default the entire population) wants to exact genocide on another planet for no apparent reason besides them being literal mustach twirling bad guys.
This mangaka isn't known for subtly, but this is bad even for him.
