But then again.. He is a teenager who just lost his father, and was almost assassinated so his mind must have been stressed and out of it.

ALSO, that duke/brother of the late emperor was CLEARLY aiming for the king position from the start. He probably threatened those priests to get what he wanted and create a fake message.
