@AiriAi he likes to be independent and wants to gain a reputation on his own before marrying anyone. I respect his decision. It is like women in our world. Most want to be a professional before marrying that way won't be dependent on the man in case of separation cuz they both dont love each other or someone cheats. Most marriages with kids do it because they don't want to separate the paternal figure but realistically speaking is cuz there is no money.
It can be said the same in this story. I believe our favorite guard, I like him much better than Fei because the guard hasn't done thing behind the third princess's back as Fei, her official husband. As you can see, he doesn't have any background. He can be played as a toy anytime. If he got a family background, things would be different. I am sure the author will find a way to allow our guard to gain some merit that will make him be satisfied and marry the third princess.
