Bailen would no doubt go for Demon Lord world domination route on his own.
The MC's naivety and desire to act for the greater good moves the story in this idealistic way.
Similar @DerpSausage said, it's his good moral nature, which is the MC's greatest strength. This in turns lets him bring clashing personalities together.
Not saying he's a great character though.
I agree that the mc is a bit lacking right now. But he was interesting in the beginning, it’s just that the current arc makes Bailen really shine. I think we still can hope on some power up in the future (even he is kinda aware of his current state, see the preceding chapter)
