For the record, 2N refers to the fact the cell is diploid, so it's somatic. There's two copies of every chromosome.
(Haploid are gametes meaning they have half the chromosomes, 23 for humans, Diploid 2N indicates a cell not in Mitosis, Diploid 4N is a cell undergoing mitosis and has 4 copies)
44 means there's 44 chromosomes (Or 22 unique ones) of the non-sex chromosomes
XX means it's female

Uh..I don't want happy ending now. I mean author has been giving us too many bad ends (even gender swapped couple is broke up because of cheating) at least have Fran do experiment on the whale child or have that woman's mother getting stepped on by her giant whale daughter(monster) or something.
