So it’s seems the corruption is kinda like your mental state. As you get more agitated the higher the corruption. And if someone calms you down or keeps you sane it goes down. Good to know he isn’t doomed to become insane.
Seems like he's some sort of berserker with that mental attribute -- except he probably loses himself for good at 100%. At least Shiro seems capable of reversing the status from progressing, for now.

So. the [Mental Pollution] Is this a copy of the D-Counter System from Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter? (except for the part that it can be partially brought down by healing or other stuff)
I think its more likely that it's a counter on how mentally unstable he is.
Its abit like using the necronomicon or any other magic from lovecraft´s universe.
You go mad by using its power, but sanity can be restored if its not too far gone by relaxing and composing yourself.
