Just because it’s a culture tradition doesn’t mean everyone should be forced do it. Honestly the history of sexual assault and rape is heavily over looked in these sorts of issues. Part of it was western racism but the sexual divide DID protect woman and girls. Japan is still pretty patriarchal and over looks these many sexual violent crimes like rape or the daily molestation of under-aged girls on public transportation.

I doubt any of the people growing up with these customs feel forced to partake in them. Humans are born naked. They're not born with the feeling of shame associated with nakedness. Back then it was simply normal to do so, just as it's normal nowadays to not show yourself naked like that.

Tbh I think it would have been fine if Miss Bird hadn't taken a bath; she can respect the culture without actively partaking in it.
