Conservation, along with recycling, is deeply ingrained into Japanese culture. There are still people who think leaving the AC on overnight is wasteful because when you're asleep, you don't "feel the heat." In a way, that's true. You don't feel hot the way you do while you're awake. Shit, my mom thought even leaving the fan on overnight was wasteful for the same reason. Most fans will have a timer for that reason. (also in Korea, the "fan death" myth which is actually a myth in itself)
