@kaarme Aside from other cultural issues, there is a legitimate concern that JSDF is often one of the first responders to major natural disasters, which are pretty regular and damn serious in Japan.

@100thlurker Firefighters have it worse in that sense. It's one of the most respected professions in any country, I imagine (though I've only seen the polls from my own). But I guess someone would also tell a person not to become a firefighter because it can be dangerous. A good thing such someones aren't listened to as otherwise nobody would be putting out fires or helping people stuck in structures.
