@unime wasn’t it because he belongs to top tier and she to middle one. Basically he’s popular and she’s average, so to avoid complications. Also they are not in a relationship, just that they haven’t yet mustered up the courage to confess. She wanted no one else to know that they are close or friends, even though he clearly conveyed he was interested in her, she told him she wanted to stay “normal”. Her obsession with “normal/average” lead them to behave as strangers in school.
