@kurobaraito Because, until they sort out their feelings for one another, they're still keeping up the pretense that they're just helping the other person get together with their crush. And it would look very bad on Jirou for said crush to catch him in the midst of what looks like a midnight date with another girl, so they panicked and hid. Of course, nobody gives two shits about the childhood friend, but them getting caught would be needless drama that'd cause them to drift apart somewhat as they tried to "fix" it.

Honestly, what I think would be most interesting would be Akari's inability to confess or clearly expressing her emotions would be her downfall (akin to Asuka from Evangelion) which, when she and her original crush and Jirou gets with his childhood friend, causes her to breakup with him and eventually come running back to Jirou, leading to a heart felt interaction between the three of them as they all try to work out the situation.

This is one of the most compelling love triangles in my opinion as you do feel as if they both have equal chances of winning.
