Let's be honest at this point. This "dense" trope doesn't work well with teachers/adults. It's just annoying. This trope can't be popular.

I think if the teacher, at one point, just acknowledged it in a obvious round about way it would be fine. For example after she calls him dense, he could simply say "I'm not dense". And if she continues to question it, he should just straight up start explaining why he is avoiding it.
