So this is a lose - lose situation. If she stupidly answers the door, well plot will happen (meaning she will most likely answer the door). If she doesn't answer the door and the maid is suspect as being shown it would be the perfect chance for the maid to sneak in to do something.....and thus plot will still happen.

While taking her with him would have been smart normally, he couldn't because he needed to sneak around. He also couldn't leave her with the daughter cause (in my humble opinion) she's also suspect or the very least there's a good chance that maid will be present. A very much damned if you do, damned if you don't moment of utter convenience.

So what im seeing is that the Father of the Current Wife of the Head of the house is behind the head´s sons murder, probably to have the Wifes son become the heir for the Head´s title when he becomes of age, im not sure if the first son that was killed is the son of the wife or not, if he was then my understandings skewed but if he is the son of the Head and the 1st wife(if there was one since i forgot if the current wife is the first or second)
