The anime skipped a lot of this and just jumped to the conclusion.

Alright. If author want reader to hate mass media, he succeed. The way media portrayed here really unsymphatetic, and unfortunately have some element of truth on it.

@otakubouzu I'm not really that familiar with the Japanese mass media, but it's my understanding they certainly have their own share of paparazzi and other sensation seeking elements, especially for a country that otherwise values respect. On the other hand the media can't function as the government's watchdog if they are too feeble.

@Kaarme My problem here is to reach the conclusion by in-world media that JSDF dragging civilian just because they bringing in a lot of wounded would be requiring quite an astounding mental gymnastic.
Of course the prime minister (it's him, right?) not attempting to explain that the wounded are friendly combatants is not helping.

@CyBerK I am a secondaries that mostly follow manga. TV Tropes mentioned about author's opinion on left-wing media but this kinda exceed my expectation lol.

@otakubouzu If I had been forced to guess, it would have been my belief that the Japanese mainstream media isn't necessarily a fan of the recent attemps by the Japanese governments to increase Japanese military presence outside of the borders. Just like most of the population feels as well. In that sense I think this series is depicting the trouble with media quite reasonably. Although I guess there must be other types of newspapers/modern media channels that would be more realistic. Those would be skipped by the author for his own reasons.

I expect few countries to have a situation as ridiculous as the USA, though.

That's a pretty piss poor representation of the media. There's no reason for the media to take wild guesses as to who the old people and women are. They should have a translator working for them who can speak with the people involved directly. Taking wild ass guesses as to who has done what and for what reasons is poor journalism. Report facts, not assumptions.

Funny of you to say that after America journalism just went through that Covington debacle. Literally reporters, bloggers, and the mobs of twitter judging a misleading video and creating their own narrative based on their own bias? There’s always an agenda behind shit journalism, and in GATE, it’s always been because of general mistrust of a seemingly unreliable government, and people needing constant scapegoats.

Edit: Also, iirc, they had a translator. She just quit because she knew the news was only here to shit on the men and women in service that saved her, no matter what kind of light she tried to shine on the situation. 3/4ths a village saved? News calls it 1/4th the village killed in a crossfire. Even now, you see news pull this with gun owners killing home invaders, even when the “victim” home invader is known for similar crimes, going as far as calling kids “murderers” for defending themselves.
