Genjitsushugi Yuusha no Oukoku Saikenki - Vol. 5 Ch. 23 - Decisive Battle

Killing the conscripts as they flee is pretty dumb.

Either they stay, and definitely get killed, or they run, and they MIGHT get killed. It's an easy choice for people who have their villages and families to think of.

@broadsword80 that's how it always been, Russians did same in the world war, they put deserters and prisoners at the front and you either march forward and by luck survive or get killed right away.

Anyways manga is catching up to where i last read LN, i hope it won't be put on hold like the LN translation was.

@gameriuxlt

Well, the difference here is that if their forces lose, the war is over. And they're already outnumbered and they can easily tell they've been outmaneuvered. Doesn't take a genius to figure out what the outcome will be.

When you're already taking heavy losses from one enemy group and you still see two more sitting on the sidelines waiting, you might as well throw in the towel at that point.

@broadsword80 well without it, no conscript would ever want to fight in the front, I mean if you were all of a sudden asked to die in a foreign land by your king, I'm sure you will say no if it's not for a threat by the king to your family, either that or a good national brainwashing so that you'll say "I'm ready to die for the glory of the kingdom" and willingly die for your kingdom

@broadsword80
The idea is quite simple really and related to one of the things that no old-time general worth their salt wanted to do to an opposing army that was beaten.

Drive them into a corner, on one side there is guaranteed death either by trying to flee or not doing a thing, on the other side, maybe, just maybe, a chance to live by cutting through the oncoming army. The desperation drives the cornered person to fight harder than they otherwise would have, plus with what @gameriuxlt said, if you have your trained troops behind them, you not only have a meat-shield for your valuable soldiers but there's a chance that the enemy troops would lose momentum going through the conscripts, leaving your men fresh and ready to fight a tired enemy.

Of course with everything that had happened with the army being relentlessly driven to the killing ground on top of being forced to abandon their fellow soldiers and conscripting barely trained peasants along the way (leaving villages without manpower in a situation that is already dangerous with a possible food shortage), this tactic is barely holding together as tired and frightened peasants don't make for good meat shields as they want to find safety somewhere. Hence the cavalry on both wings waiting until the right time to launch their attack, give the conscripts enough time to find avenues to flee and cause chaos amongst their number, then attack, firmly entrenching the need to flee rather than fight in the conscripts.

@CBC

Yep, it's good that MC left the tactics to his subordinates rather than commanding himself, since they could probably see that. I don't think MC would have taken that into consideration since he has no background in military training.

@broadsword80
He's actually really good at that, acknowledging areas he sucks in and then finding people to delegate those duties to so that he can focus on what he is good at. Souma's a very different kind of Isekai MC, one that's a breath of fresh air amongst the hyper-competent-at-everything or sucks-at-everything or lone-wolf MCs.

Thanks for the chapter
and
@gameriuxlt the LN is already licensed in english, so the translation is probably dropped, the LN were available on J-novel club and already on volume 10

One thing I'm still surprised about is the fact that LH is still using their own version of names despite already having official English names available.
