I have no clue about the novel, but I still feel the pacing is a little too fast. Like.... sudden jumps and story moves on.

I think that judge is far worse than Gordon Ramsey. He doesn't just attack their cooking, but personally attacks them. And it's not an act like Ramsay. This dude is just a complete a-hole. Seriously, telling someone they belong in hell is pretty frickin' nasty.
