This is one of those Naruto tropes that I hate (along with the airplane run where someone runs with their arms behind them like plane wings), where they bite their thumb to draw blood. It's so impractical.

I remember reading one wuxia/xianxia where someone just willed a drop of blood out of their body with their cultivation. That actually sounds much cooler.

Yeah not gonna lie I've tried this method of drawing blood, it's seriously one of the worst was, not just it's harder than you think ( without basically biting into your bone ) it doesn't even give out enough blood, you can scratch yourself ( with enough force ) and easy get more and doesn't hurt nearly as much and as nasty ( just keep your hands and nails clean, and the wound obviously ) so him using his broken sword sounds more sensible, but yeah no that willing the blood out sounds pretty tight lloll I would've love to see that,
