Golden Kamuy - Vol. 4 Ch. 31 - 203 Hill

Top left, middle panel, p7:
That looks like a Mark IX tank, an armoured fighting vehicle designed in 1917. The very first tank wasn't developed until 1915, and was done so in complete secrecy, which makes me wonder again about when this is supposed to have been set...?

Russo Japanese War ended in September of 1905. Time to go back home and traveling back to Hokkaido to pan for gold could be a couple months so it's a safe bet to say series begins in January 1906.

@gronkle Well this manga has a historical setting and the author clearly makes effort to guarantee that many details are as certain as possible, but history is made of a plethora of things and every one of them can be a topic of study and research by itself, and even being a non-fiction story there is still some room for some errors and liberties in its construction. If you are a history buff i understand if those detail grats on the nerves, more so if it is a topic you know.

I believe that like TheAmazingAvian said this is at most 1 year after the Russo-Japanese war, maybe one and a half, more than that and i feel it would take something of the story.

I could swear to god that I get a glimpse of Lenin and his motherland rethoric when I see Tsurumi

@gronkle Well, it's not like they were showing the tank in the story itself. I think that's just meant to be an artistic liberty taken, showing technology from WW1 while they're referencing it, even if that is still in the future from when this story is set.

Idk why but military characters like Tsurumi are just great. Really glad Hijikata survived too, he's a relic of samurai era.
