@Betony Illiteracy in that age was really big so yes maybe they couldn't make a letter, and he may have not wanted to risk the possibility that even if he didn't have the symptoms he could have the disease and pass to the rest of them he could to be so stricken by shame of what he did that he couldn't face them. It is easy to judge when you are outside of the moment but many things pass inside the mind of a person in a moment like that.
