Gorae Byul - The Gyeongseong Mermaid - Ch. 19 - I Cannot Speak (2/9)

Every chapter my heart breaks for Soo-a... I hope at the end of all this, there is some form of happiness and peace for her.

is this manga trying to make me think that japan did nothing wrong

@Fuko : War brings out the worst and the best in people. Both sides of the war are capable of cruelty. But it doesn't discount how horrifying Japan's actions were at that period of time.

@Fuko even literal nazis were horrified at the Japanese treatment of prisoners so..in fact here was a nazi dude who hid people from the Japanese during that time. Yes people are complex and more than black and white but its hard to say japan did nothing wrong when the top government generals were having contests on who could kill the most civilians.

@Fuko if literally anyone or anything can convince you the japanese did nothing wrong when they occupied korea then you need to read a history book lmfao

this is such a sad and… i hate to say beautiful given the topic, but the art is beautiful and the way the story is laid out and connected to ariel… i hope she gets her happy ending.

also, i wonder how much of this is based on a true story? like obviously a lot of it is, but was there a soo-a? (sooah?)

thank you for translating this. it’s really well done 💕💕

@Fuko Definitely not. I think the manhwa is just trying to avoid painting everything in black and white and making these guys the undisputed heroes in a war-like revolution setting. The character in this chapter who said that Haesoo only did what he could is right, nobody is a civilian to these people, there are friends and foes and any doubt undermines their efforts. The fact that Haesoo took responsibility despite him not wanting to poison her, the fact that he couldn't watch as he presumed she died and that he's seen at the end here, gripping his chest shows immense regret.

@theilikepie Technically the rape of Nanjing happened in WW2 and this is way before that but the occupation of Korea even during this period was anything but peaceful.

This my first post on this site and the first comment that I have ever put on a manga or manhwa. Please do not drop this! I beg of you! Everything about this manhwa is so beautiful. From the artworks to how you guys translated this. I can feel the emotions. It breaks my heart to see soo ah in this position. Hears to hoping that she has a happy ending.

@Fuko what are you talking about?

The obviously cruel dad is a Japan sympathiser, who was forcing his daughter into a marriage.

The main love interest is part of the Korean Independence movement.

There hasn't been a single "good character" who is Japanese
